Quick-Start Introduction to PDS Archiving

VOLDESC.CAT

This file contains an ODL description of the contents of the volume. It is used to load the volume information into the central PDS database.

The file contains a VOLUME object; the structure of the sub-OBJECTs included in the VOLUME defines the logical hierarchy of the data (and also the physical organization, for random-access media). In addition, the included CATALOG object provides a list of the various catalog files provided in the volume.

Appendix A of the PDS Standards Reference gives detailed examples of VOLUME objects for both serial and direct-access media.
