The NEAR spacecraft is shown in its deployed flight condition in this artist's rendering. A 1.5 meter antenna and four solar panels are mounted on the outside of the forward deck. NEAR Shoemaker is the first solar-powered spacecraft to fly beyond the orbit of Mars.
